What is astrology?
Is Astrology-Based in Science?
The Hindi word for Astrology is Jyotish – which literally translates to the 'eye of the Veda'.
Almost everyone has heard about Astrology and many people know what are Sun Signs. We also tend to read the daily horoscopes and other predictions that appear in various websites, newspapers, and magazines. And, since this is a common interface that serves as Astrology for us – many of us think this is what Astrology is all about!
Astrology consists of a number of belief systems that hold that there is a relationship between astronomical phenomena and events or descriptions of personality in the human world. Astrology has been rejected by the scientific community as having no explanatory power for describing the universe. Scientific testing has found no evidence to support the premises or purported effects outlined in astrological traditions.

But, there is much more to know about Astrology. Simply put, Astrology is a science of the stars - derived from the Latin word - astrologia - study of the stars. In fact, Astrology is a very ancient subject and practice, and it has been practiced globally, in many of its forms, for centuries. Astrology is basically related to the study of the cosmos, and how the stars and other planetary objects in the universe influence life on the earth. The predictive use of this subject is relatively newer, as initially the subject was used to study weather and climatic patterns, understand the causes that led to certain events, treat or get rid of an evil eye and many such other things.
The subject of Astrology originally falls under the category of metaphysics and is based on the age-old theories of energy patterns, such as Reiki, Aura reading, Feng Shui, acupuncture and yoga. Actually, the gravitational forces of different planets have their own effects on the Earth, as well as on the people who live on Earth. Moreover, each of the 12 zodiac signs is a distinct combination of one of the four basic elements of the environment - Earth, Air, Fire, Water - and one of the three fundamental qualities - Cardinal, Fixed, Variable.
Since the dawn of civilization, Astrology has been commonly used to understand and predict events related to all the areas of our life. Similarly, today Astrology is widely used for personal readings, understanding oneself, and to get an insight into matters related to business, health, finance, career, marriage, wealth, relationships, etc. Although different cultures share common roots in ancient astrological practices, they have devised their unique methodologies. Earlier, western cultures practiced Western Astrology, whereas, eastern cultures practiced Chinese and Vedic Astrology. But nowadays, all these are commonly practiced and embraced worldwide.
A person who practices Astrology is called an Astrologer. In the Vedic System of Astrology or Jyotish Vidya, such a practitioner is known as a Jyotish. The relationships between the celestial bodies and the Zodiac Signs and their interactions are calculated and read mathematically. An Astrologer or Jyotish studies these mathematical cycles, the movements of planets and their effects of these planets on individuals, and predicts accordingly. The celestial system known as the Zodiac is divided into 12 Zodiac Sign – basis certain Astronomical positions etc., and are thus attributed unique characteristics.
The position of the Sun, Moon, stars and other planets at the time of our birth is known to shape our personality, affects our lives and predestine our destinies. Astrology also empowers individuals by helping them understand their inherent strengths and potential. Like religion, Astrology also deals with the concept of karma – the deeds of this life will shape your next life.
An Astrologer or Jyotish can prepare a subject's Horoscope – which is a mathematical Chart/ Graph that depicts the map of the universe at the time of one's birth, with the individual at its centre, while the Sun, Moon, and other heavenly bodies are regarded as that person's Natal planets or stars. An expert Astrologer or Jyotish can study one's Birth Chart and offer solutions for life's most difficult and seemingly hopeless challenges. An Astrologer or Jyotish imbues hope and optimism into the concerned person and also suggests various remedies to resolves their problems.
